Sailplane Racing

Sailplane racing features complex strategic decision making and rewards superior flying skill and pilot “touch.” Trying to explain sailplane racing to someone who has never flown a sailplane cross country, or in competition, can best be accomplished by offering some derivative of Rutger Hauers famous speech from “The Blade Runner…” “I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe…”. That really sums it up best. It is like being a bird, but in what amount to a formula one car of powerless flight. Near absolute perfection in terms of soaring efficiently, modern sailplanes are incredible to experience. In their element, it is almost unimaginable how far and fast they are capable of traveling around a race course which ranges from 150mi to 700mi in a single day.
